Dwóch wnuków legendarnego mistrza kory, Alhagi Bai Conteha, spotyka się na jednej scenie w Warszawie. Buba Badjie Kuyateh i Dawda Jobarteh – wychowani w gambijskim Brikama, dziś mieszkający w Polsce i Danii – kontynuują wielowiekową tradycję Mandingów, tworząc projekt KORA DUO.

Kora, 21-strunowa harfa Afryki Zachodniej, w ich rękach staje się wehikułem pomiędzy przeszłością a przyszłością. Buba wnosi funkowy puls i jazzowe dialogi, Dawda eksperymentuje z elektroniką, improwizacją i brzmieniami z północy Europy. Ich wspólna muzyka to spotkanie korzeni i nowoczesności, tradycji i osobistego głosu. To opowieść, której się nie słucha – w niej się zanurza.

The kora is a traditional 21-stringed harp instrument from West Africa played by specific Manding families passing the tradition on from generation to generation. One of the 20th century’s great kora masters was Alhagi Bai Conteh traveling the world with his kora and raising his family in the Gambia in the town of Brikama.

Two of his grandsons, Buba Badjie Kuyateh and Dawda Jobarteh grew up with the family in Brikama. As adults they have settled in Poland and Denmark pursuing their musical careers. Now they are collaborating on a double kora project like their uncles have done before them.

Buba is of the Gambian ’funky style’ music generation and plays fusion with his band Bantaba mixing kora music with funk and jazz and works with various artists such as for example Stanisaw Soyka. Besides, he teaches students from all over the world to play the kora.

To Dawda the kora is new every day when he explores the instrument on his musical adventures. He began playing percussion as a child and did not take up the kora before he was a young adult. What a luck for us that he did. When he creates his music, he uses electronic effects and combines his musical experiences from jazz and rock, from Scandinavia and West Africa, from afro, pop and folk music in collaborations with musicians from all around the world.
